There is something inside of you that yearns for more. It is an intrinsic pull of gravity that draws us towards the living God who created the Heavens and the Earth.
Why are we so drawn towards him? Why can’t we escape this feeling? The Psalmist here compares the strong pull towards God to a deer that pants by the water brook. Imagine a deer who was frightened at the mere presence of danger. This deer was swift and used all of its power and strength to escape the present threat that sought to destroy it. As a result of fleeing this danger, the deer has now ignited a thirst within itself that it yearns with all of its beings to quench with the coolness of the water that flows in the brook.
Wow, now picture yourself fleeing the dangers of the world, temptation, and sin. Fleeing to save your life and running with all of your strength, searching for that thing that calms, soothes, and quenches this thirst created by your pursuit to find a place of peace and safety that you know can only be found in God.
Now everything within you yearns to be filled with this thing that the writer juxtaposes with water; this was not a mistake because Jesus refers to the word of God as water. The Word of God is that which we should pursue relentlessly because it is the only thing that can quench or satisfy the thirst of our spirit man for more of Him. So Let this time of fasting and prayer push you relentlessly to satisfy your thirst for Him!
