“But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified.” 1 Corinthians 9:27 ESV
Contrary to what we have been taught, fasting and praying does not come in one size fits all. The truth is you have to train for this. Wait one minute; what do you mean?
On a runners’ first attempt at running, they don’t sign up to run a marathon because their chances of winning are low. Yet in the church, someone is expected to fast like Daniel or even like Jesus for 40 days in their first attempt. Every athlete knows that proper preparation and conditioning is key to increasing their chances of winning.
Paul speaks metaphorically of an athlete running a race to point out a conclusion that holds true for the believer who fasts and prays. He said, “I discipline my body and kept it under control…” Paul spent time studying the word of God. He spent time in personal devotion unto Him, and as a result his spiritual muscles were conditioned and strengthened. He had the necessary endurance to fast and pray to draw closer to God when he needed him most. This was Paul’s exercise to create muscle memory. It’s yours too! Over time the practice of fasting will seem like a natural occurrence. Your spiritual journey requires discipline and self-control to win the race called life.
During this time of fasting and praying, may it become a natural part of your spiritual journey. May you have the strength to maintain in the face of every situation that seeks to shake your faith.
