Depression and anxiety are topics we must openly discuss, particularly in the church. Some fear that depression displays a sign of weakness or makes you less of a Believer. My friend, if you are suffering from depression, it does NOT unveil a sign of weakness. However, it does signify the need for coping skills. I will tell you firsthand; it can cripple your life if you let it. You must make a decision to break up with depression…for good!
You CAN overcome depression and restore your joy. 1.) Don’t suffer alone. The enemy wants you to think no one will ever understand what you’re going through. And oh, doesn’t he do such a good job at making us believe this? It’s time to change your mindset. Instead, confide in a trusting friend, co-worker, family member, or spiritual adviser. Often, we are afraid that others will judge us. Avoid isolation and ask God to send you a confidante who will aid in your healing.
2.) Do you know that God has given counselors, therapists, and psychologists the tools to help heal your mental condition? Look for local licensed counselors. Often, your health insurance carrier will provide coverage or your employer may offer an Employee Assistance Program (EAP). Check into these resources if the cost is a concern.
3.) Have faith and believe that you can be delivered from depression. We have a Savior who feels our agony and sees every tear. “Have faith in God,” Jesus answered. “Truly I tell you, if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and does not doubt in their heart but believes that what they say will happen, it will be done for them. Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. Mark 11:22-24 NIV
Lastly, every time the devil reminds you of that thing (you know, that thing that sends you quickly into a downward spiral), you must 4.) Put on the whole armor. EVERY. SINGLE. DAY! It’s difficult to attack an opponent who trains daily and is prepared for battle. Yes, this is a battle! And you can be VICTORIOUS if you read and apply the Word, keep a continuous prayer line with the Father, and connect to a Bible-teaching, Spirit-filled church. My friend, are you ready for battle?
My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. Psalm 73:26 NIV
