” 16 “And when you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. 17 But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, 18 that your fasting may not be seen by others but by your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.” Matthew 6:16-18 ESV
Have you ever been going through something or been sick and share your story with someone only to hear these words, “you don’t look like you’re sick, you don’t look like you’ve been through that?” Hallelujah, this is a testament to the fact that God is a keeper and the reality is it’s not everybody’s business after all.
This same sentiment applies to the believer when we fast and pray. The writer of the Gospel, according to Matthew, spoke of this. He wanted the believer to know that you don’t have to look defeated, weak, sorrowful, or broken as you fast as the hypocrites do. Why? Because it draws unnecessary attention to you, causing men to look at or to you rather than putting the attention on God, it is the hypocrites’ way of seeking pity. When pity is received, it nullifies the purpose of fasting because the reward has already been given after making you a spectacle to be seen of men.
During the time of fasting and praying, may our motives be pure and true. May we take care of ourselves physically so that the Lord is pleased with our ways. Remember, HE SEES YOU, and may he take delight in the pureness of your heart and your intent.
