” 10 The name of the LORD is a strong tower; the righteous man runs into it and is safe..” Proverbs 18:10 ESV
Everybody is looking for the same thing in life, and that is a place where you feel safe, whether it financial safety, emotional safety, safety in a relationship, or only a safe place to call home; the truth of the matter is that every single one of us wants to find it. The problem is that we look for safety and comfort in the wrong places. Sometimes we look for it in drugs only to discover that it’s not there; we look for it in promiscuity only to find that it’s not there; we look for it in our significant other only to find that it is not there. It seems as though safety is a mystical, magical place that only exists in fairytales. This can seem disheartening, but don’t lose hope.
The Psalmist describes the Lord as a “Strong Tower.” This is the highest place in the palace and signifies superiority. No matter what direction the enemy attacks, he can be seen from the strong tower and repelled by a superior force. When God is referred to as a Strong Tower, it is a snapshot of his attributes. Those attributes are his love, his mercy, his power, his knowledge, his faithfulness, his peace, his protection, and the list goes on and on. The Psalmist wanted us to know that we can run to God and find safety because he will always be exactly what we need. Did you ever wonder why when Moses asked God whom shall I say sent me, God said to tell them, “I am that I am!” This means that only God alone, the Strong Tower, will be all that we need.
May this time of fasting and praying help you understand that the Lord will always be what you need when you need it most. He will always be your strong tower and my safe place.
